Into the Shadows is the third book in Carolyn Crane’s Associates series and it’s just as great as the first two, maybe even better. I say that because I’ve been looking forward to Thorne’s book and it didn’t disappoint. This series is consistently a darker, edgier type of romantic suspense and I’m already looking forward to the next installment. (Note: you can read the books out of order, there's not an overarching plot.)Into the Shadows is about two broken people who are fighters and survivors. Thorne is part of the Associates and so deep undercover that until recently, others in the group didn’t even know he was an Associate. Most people think he’s one of the leaders in a criminal group called Hangman. Nadia’s deceased father was a gangster that Thorne used to work for (undercover) and she and Thorne had an intense, sexual relationship. No one in her life ever saw her, the real her, except Thorne. And it’s the same for him; Nadia saw through all his crap and they formed a relationship that worked. When he overhears something that’s a lie (Nadia only said because she couldn’t bear to lose him) he thinks that he means nothing to her so when her father died years before, and Thorne got what he needed for his undercover job, he just cut her out of his life because he assumed he meant nothing to her.
The story starts two years after their intense time together with Nadia’s gangster father dead and her a new mother. And her priorities have changed in a big way; she’s no longer the ‘Party Princess’. Not only that but she found out something she was never supposed to and it changed her reality. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but what she’s doing with her life is incredibly noble and her actions inadvertently make her life intersect with her ex, Thorne. When Thorne storms back into her life years later the chemistry between them is so potent it jumped off the pages. What he’s working toward is also noble and I loved that two broken people got a second chance.
There’s so much action and mystery in this book and it’s skillfully woven with intense sexual tension. I think my favorite thing about Crane’s characters is that they’re all incredibly flawed yet likeable. It makes getting to the ending that much better. Into the Shadows is an edgy, gritty romantic suspense with two main characters who will break your heart and have you laughing moments later. I highly recommend this romantic suspense to fans of the genre!

Thorne was introduced in earlier books as a stone cold killer and one of the inner circle of Hangman, a chaos focused gang. Nadia is the Party Princess, daughter of a dead crime boss and Thorne' s former assignment as her bodyguard when he worked for Victor. After Victor' s death, Thorne divided his territory into quarters. It is two years later and someone is hitting the Silos, the drug and human trafficking centers of the business. Thorne is sent to Victor' s mansion to search again for a CD containing the businesses' operational information. But when Thorne forces his way into the mansion, he finds a different Nadia than the one he left behind. This Nadia is all grown up, she has a toddler, and she takes her responsibilities seriously. Though Thorne still lovehates her, he also still wants her. And as the world around them devolves into chaos, his only thought is to protect, a thought that could get a man who works alone killed.
Each book in the series has focused on the unique skills of the Associate. Book One was mathematics, book two was linguistics and this book is chaos. Crane has done an amazing job in writing the stories in such a way that they have the feel and flow of each. This book was slower in building intensity and suspense than the first two. It is a reunion with a long continuation of the big misunderstanding. But when it breaks loose, it is impossible to put down. I grew to love Nadia and her mission. That she could see and cherish the real Thorne was another plus. And Thorne, just wow. There has never been a better good bad guy. This book and series get a solid five stars. Can't wait for the next one. And while the books can standalone, they are better when read in sequence. Book One, Against the Dark, is included in the Danger and Desire anthology, another five star book. Book Two, Off the Edge, is sold individually.
Carolyn Crane is quickly climbing the ranks in my all time favorite authors...right up there with Kristen Ashely & Maya Banks...love me some hardcore badass men the likes of Rock Chicks and KGI Series.
I wasn't sure I'd like Thorne in the beginning...his self hatred made me want to slap him and hug him all at the same time. Yummy as he might be his past should never define him. But he was yummy and his hard core warrior attitude won me over.
Nadia on the other hand...gurllll...I wanted to slap her several times...tell that boy the truth...tell him who he is to you...let him help you...GEESH!
But the story was awesome...the plot was not your typical romantic suspense and the ending had me cheering for all of the Associates and getting excited about the others books. Although I'm very excited to read Zelda's story...she and Dax have me so intrigued...
AWESOME BOOK!
I'm sad to say this because I loved the first two books in this series and I really enjoy the author's writing style but this book just didn't work for me. I didn't like the love/hate relationship between the two main characters and the trope of misunderstandings that seemed to carry throughout the book not to mention the secret baby issue. I had a hard time liking the heroine and I never really understood her justification for keeping her son a secret. It would have been different if she hadn't grown up in "the life" and wasn't doing dangerous things herself but she had plenty of enemies and danger was already a part of her life so using the dad's dangerous lifestyle as the reason just didn't work for me. Still I'll read the 4th book in the series because I loved the first two.
