Whoever said "violence is a last resort" never had a Minotaur for a best friend.

Warlock Marcus Shifter has been sent on the most dangerous mission of his career travel to the remote Minotaur nation and convince them not to abandon the tenuous peace agreement between the humans and the paranormals. But securing that peace requires his best friend, Steve the Minotaur, to help him find a way in to the isolated homeland. A homeland Steve left behind long ago, intending to bury his complicated past.

Secrets and intrigue aren't the only trouble Marcus uncovers with the notoriously blunt Minotaurs. Between political upheaval and their own civil unrest, rebellion is brewing. A Minotaur revolt wouldn't just mean the end of the Reformation Treaty, but a shattering of the peace it represents. Cut off from allies and low on ammunition, Marcus must find a way to prevent the coming storm before the human and paranormal worlds are plunged into a horrific, bloody war…

Book three of the Shifter Chronicles

Paranormal Chaos The Shifter Chronicles Book 3 eBook Joshua Roots

The first thing I want to put out there is how thoroughly depressed I am that this is the last book of this series. Urban fantasy with male protagonists are getting harder and harder to come by these days (not to mention that many UF authors are now being dropped by their publishers). If, however, this truly is the last of the Shifter Chronicles, then what a way to go out!

I grinned from ear to ear when I read that this last book would focus on the bromance between Marcus and his BFF, Minotaur Steve. Steve has been my absolute favorite character since Marcus first (accidentally) burned down his bar in the Underground. Their relationship and the banter between them never ceases to bring me joy. In this book, Marcus and Steve travel to the Minotaur homeland to negotiate a treaty. As expected, things get pretty chaotic fairly quickly, and the two BFFs find themselves in the middle of a war. Things definitely get worse before they get better, but when all is said and done, the villian soon realizes that it never pays to underestimate Marcus Shifter.

One of the things I've always loved about the character of Marcus is the fact that he's so completely emo. Male protagonists in urban fantasy are often depicted as these tough, sarcastic, fearless, hyper-macho types, which, I suppose, is done to further enhance their heroism. While I actually do enjoy these character types, it was still a real pleasure to come across a character like Marcus, whose compassion and sensitivity are on constant display. He is not a guy who is emotionally detached - at all! Heck, even his girlfriend, Quinn, is tougher than he is. This is a guy who cares very deeply for others, and the "feels" that emanate from him in any given situation, good or bad, are refreshingly enjoyable to read. Don't get me wrong now, Marcus is nobody's punk. If you start something with him or those he cares about, he WILL finish it!

This is also the main reason why I found Marcus' friendship with Minotaur Steve so entertaining. Steve is this big, huge, bull of a man-beast, and could literally crush Marcus like a bug if he wanted to (especially considering how they first met). He makes no secret of the fact that Marcus is a hot mess, yet he finds himself inexplicably drawn to this human and the constant "chaos" that surrounds him. Having Marcus Shifter as a friend is downright dangerous, but Steve wouldn't trade him in for the world because he knows that in Marcus he's found the best and most loyal friend he could ever hope to have. So much so that he pretty much gives up his life in the paranormally safer reaches of the Underground to join Marcus and the Shifter family in their ongoing efforts to unite their two worlds.

The book flows nicely and the ending ties up a lot, if not all, of the loose threads. Overall it's a wonderfully satisfying ending for an truly enjoyable Urban Fantasy series.

Thank you Joshua Roots. I'll be keeping a lookout for more stories from you. In the meantime - Long live Marcus, Steve and Quinn!

Paranormal Chaos The Shifter Chronicles Book 3 eBook Joshua Roots Reviews

Well written and exciting! I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series!
This was the best of the series. The story was credible and you got to see up close the relationship between Steve and Marcus who have been the centre for me.
3rd book in series, liked them all, not the best I've read of the genre, but not the worst. Good characters, action, dialogue, story is engaging, if you like urban fantasy this is pretty good, better than some, not as good as the best. Would read more from this author.
Overall good reading time. Worth the money and time to read this series. Well created characters that were consistent or changed as events would cause. Nicely created world that worked for the story.
I was not sure about the series at first but I am pleased to have read them!
Would make great anime movie, as sweeping as Tolkein but more modern.
Wizard hero knows that sometimes moral choice and practical choice may be very different, but he will pick moral choice in a split second.
Book's hero does lame proposal, but he's modest enough to be unsure of himself. Part of being likable.
Marcus Shifter is a powerful combat wizard who had lost much of his magical strength by turning his back on his powers and his culture. The series details his development after returning to the Skilled world. The author has constructed a believable world where normal humans and paranormal entities are starting to coexist. The characters are well rounded and are treated honestly.

Editing in the series had been hit and miss, and while better I did notice a few hiccups. The plot has a few minor holes in it but overall it is a fast fun read and I look forward to seeing what Mr Roots comes up with next.
Great ending to a series and characters that hopefully one day we'll see more of.....? Anyway, if you've made it to book three, then you know the quality of Josh's work. I really appreciate an author who has excellent characters and stories, but doesn't string readers along with book after book having no ending in sight. That being said, much like Dresden, this series really could just keep going, as every story is basically contained in the pages of the book you're reading. That means new adventures every time, without waiting 5 books for the main character to find the sword and destroy all evil.
Hope to see future escapades for Shifter! However, you've definitely found a reader in me, Mr. Roots, so I can't wait to see what story you try next!
